What is bikram yoga?

Bikram yoga is a series of 26 poses and two breathing exercises that works the entire body in 90 minutes. Bikram yoga stretches and strengthens muscles, ligaments and joints and stimulates the organs, glands and nerves, moving fresh oxygenated blood to 100 percent of the body, restoring all systems to a healthy working order. Bikram yoga builds energy, stamina and flexibility.  Bikram yoga is suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Each class follows the same series of poses so you are only a beginner once.

The series was scientifically designed by Bikram Choudhury to deliver total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body in order to prevent illness and injury, promote weight loss, and limit the effects of aging. In addition, the series of postures combine concentration, patience, determination and self-control to increase mental clarity and reduce stress.

For maximum benefit, do not eat a large meal at least two hours before class. Drink plenty of water before coming to class. New students should arrive at least 15 minutes before class to register. Those who come early to class should warm up with gentle stretches. Bikram says the most important minutes of class are the 10 minutes just before class begins.

What should I bring?

Bring two large towels, a hand towel, a bottle of water and a yoga mat. (Towels and mats can be rented at the studio for $1.00 each.)

What should I wear?

Women should wear shorts and a tank top or sports bra. Men should wear workout shorts or swim trunks. Loose clothing and long pants are not recommended.

How often should I attend class?

For good results, we encourage a regular practice of 3 times per week minimum. For life-changing results, 4 or more times per week.

Why is the room so hot?

The heat combined with the sequence of the postures is what makes Bikram yoga so special. The room is heated to warm the muscles allowing you to work deeper in a shorter amount of time, seeing faster results. Heat allows the muscles to relax during stretches and helps prevent injuries.

Yoga doesn’t just work muscles, but massages deep tissues, glands, organs as well. As you work deep within your body, you may start to release "poisons" or "toxins" that have been stored for a long time. Sweating helps flush toxins from your body, giving you a wonderful glow from head to toe.

What are the benefits?

There are a variety of benefits from practicing Bikram yoga including weight loss, injury healing, immune system improvement, increased flexibility, increased concentration and mental clarity and stress reduction.
